Volkswagen is abbreviated as VW and headquartered in Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony, Germany. Volkswagen is the original marquee in the Volkswagen Group, which includes the car marquees Audi, Bentley Motors, Bugatti Automobiles, Automobili Lamborghini, SEAT, Skoda Auto and heavy goods vehicle manufacturer Scania. Volkswagen means “people’s car” in German. The name is originally pronounced as “folks va:gen. The owners of Volkswagen are the Porsche family, the Emirate of Qatar and the state of Lower Saxony.
Volkswagen was originally founded in 1937 by the National Socialist trade union of German Labour Front ( Deutsche Arbeitsfront). During that time period most German vehicles where luxury cars and most of the German people could not afford such vehicles. Josef Ganz developed the Standard Superior that people could afford to buy. It was of course the Volkswagen. It became very popular as the People’s Car and was made available to the people in the third Reich. Hitler chose to sponsor an all new, state owned factory. He selected Ferdinand Porsche to spearhead the project as he was already famous for the creation of the Porsche and the designer of the Mercedes. The vehicle was saved by British Army Officer Major Ivan Hirst, REME. In April 1945 the heavily bombed factory had been turned over to the Major after being captured by the Americans and subsequently the factory and town had fallen. The plan originally had been to turn the vehicle into a war machine but Hirst painted one of the vehicles green and showed it off at the British Army headquarters. He managed to salvage the vehicle and the British Army was persuaded to place a vital order for 20,000 of the vehicles for their personnel. Since Volkswagen became popular all around the world and in the United States became known as the “BUG”. Walt Disney even made a movie called “Herbie the Love Bug” which gave the little car its start in U.S. among teenagers. The car is famous today and many people like driving the smaller vehicle who first put its motor in the rear-end instead of in front of the car.
